November 11-13, 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal
August 20, 2025: GAITHERSBURG, Maryland – The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), the world’s leading professional society for fire protection and fire safety engineering, invites professionals from across the globe to the SFPE Engineering Solutions Symposium: Addressing European Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Safety Challenges, taking place November 11–13, 2025, in Lisbon, Portugal.
This three-day, in-person event will convene an international panel of experts to explore the pressing fire safety issues posed by lithium-ion batteries across applications ranging from consumer electronics and e-bikes to electric vehicles (EVs) and large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). As one of the most critical emerging hazards in fire protection, lithium-ion batteries present unique risks that require innovative approaches to fire safety, system design, emergency response, and regulatory frameworks.
The symposium will feature technical presentations, panel discussions, and interactive dialogue with distinguished researchers, engineers, designers, architects, insurers, manufacturers, facility managers, and first responders. Attendees will gain essential insights into lithium-ion battery hazard fundamentals, evolving fire safety codes and standards, and practical mitigation strategies for high-risk applications such as e-mobility, EVs, and energy storage.
Key Learning Objectives include:
- Examining the fire safety implications of emerging battery technologies
- Understanding the mechanisms and risks of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries
- Exploring design solutions and regulatory frameworks for battery energy storage systems
- Investigating the role of diagnostics and monitoring in battery safety management
- Assessing the impact of battery fires on infrastructure and emergency response
- Promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration for safer battery ecosystems
Following two and a half days of educational programming, the symposium will conclude with an exclusive site visit to a newly constructed, state-of-the-art data center featuring a lithium-ion battery backup system—providing attendees with a firsthand look at safety integration in a cutting-edge facility.
The program is guided by an international committee of leading experts, including symposium co-chairs Adam Barowy and Guillermo Rein, PhD, alongside a distinguished team of researchers and practitioners representing academia, industry, and government agencies.
The event will be hosted at the Sheraton Lisboa Hotel & Spa, which offers world-class accommodation in the heart of Lisbon and direct access to the city’s cultural and historic attractions.
Early-bird registration discounts are available through October 10, 2025.
